California law
Legal research that shows you where the answer came from.
Ask it anything in California law, or a draft you need written — and it answers like a capable associate. Switch on grounded mode and it answers from an indexed corpus of California statutes and real court opinions instead — instructed to cite the authority behind each legal statement, and to say so in the first line when the corpus has nothing to stand on.
Gemini runs on Arcana’s BAA-covered Google Cloud. Files you attach are read by the model and kept with that chat, encrypted. Web search is optional and sends a search query to Tavily, a third-party search provider, outside the BAA.
What is the notice period for a summary judgment motion in California?
The motion must be served and filed at least 81 days before the hearing [1], extended if served by mail [1]. Opposition is due 20 days before the hearing, and a reply 11 days before [2]. The moving party bears the initial burden of showing no triable issue of material fact [3].

Built for privileged questions
What happens to what you type
Stated narrowly and only where it is already true of the running product. We hold no SOC 2 or ISO certification and do not claim one.
Encrypted at rest, with keys we hold
Message content is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before it reaches the database, under a rotatable keyring we control — not only the storage layer’s own disk encryption.
Gemini, on our enterprise cloud, under a BAA
Arcana Chat runs Google’s Gemini on Arcana’s own Google Cloud project, covered by our Business Associate Agreement — not a consumer chatbot account. It refuses to answer at all if that project is not configured for a covered region.
Web search is optional — and outside the BAA
Web search is off unless you turn it on for a conversation. When it is on, Arcana writes a search query from your question, runs it through Tavily, a third-party search provider, and lists the sites the answer drew on — and that query is outside our BAA. Keep client-confidential details out of a searched question. It is still an AI model: check what it tells you.
Encrypted in transit
Every request and response travels over TLS. Nothing about your session crosses a network in the clear.
Upload files — kept in the chat, encrypted
Attach PDFs, images, audio, video, Word documents or text to a message and the model reads them — and keeps them for that chat, so you can keep asking about them: their text is saved with the chat, encrypted, and the file itself is held for up to a day. Files you add to a chat’s Knowledge Base are kept, encrypted, until you remove them or delete the chat; you can open and download them there, and the model does not read them yet. We store the text you type and the files you upload, so treat a chat as you would any system of record.
It is a research tool, not counsel, and not a substitute for your own verification. Read the authority before you rely on it.
Privacy trust
Confidentiality matters before you type.
Arcana Chat is designed for the confidentiality duty reflected in Rule 1.6: clear boundaries around the information you put in the chat, without treating the tool as a substitute for your professional judgment.
- 01
Chat content is encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM; encryption keys are managed separately and never stored in the database.
- 02
Chat content is not used to train models.
- 03
Arcana Chat cannot access your case files, matters, or documents.
How it works
A question in, an answer you can check.
- 01
Ask it the way you would ask an associate
Plain questions in California law — across civil litigation, employment, habitability, personal injury, family, business and administrative law. Ask it to draft, too: demands, complaints, meet-and-confer letters, discovery.
- 02
Turn on grounding and it answers from the corpus
Grounded mode is a switch you throw per question: your question runs against an indexed corpus of California statutes and court opinions, pulling dozens of candidate authorities so the answer can cite the source behind each statement. Grounding itself uses no search engine; web search is a separate switch, off unless you turn it on.
- 03
A grounded answer arrives with its authority attached
In grounded mode the model is instructed to attach an inline citation to every legal statement, and each numbered source is listed with its excerpt. Read the language yourself before you rely on it — that check is the point, and it is yours to make.
When it does not know, it opens by telling you
With grounding on, if the corpus has no strong match for your question, the answer is instructed to open with a plain warning that it is drawing on general knowledge and should be verified. That instruction is enforced in the prompt, not by a checker — so the page will not tell you it is a guarantee. A confident-sounding answer with no authority behind it is the failure mode this product is built to discourage, and the reason every source is printed for you to check.

Ask it something you already know the answer to.
That is the honest way to evaluate a research tool. Check its citations against the authority you already have, and see whether it earns the next question.
